Most of the 682 317 foreigners who have entered the country since the beginning of June were from Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said yesterday.
She was briefing the media on access control for the tournament. She said that most visitors came from Lesotho followed by Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and Botswana.
The most visitors from elsewhere in the world were from the United Kingdom and the United States followed by Germany, Australia, Mexico and then Brazil.
Between June 1 and June 13 just over 450 000 foreign travelers entered South Africa and up to June 21 another 226 000 had arrived.
Sapa reports that she also said that to date there had been 12 157 cases of people overstaying entry conditions, abusing permits or reporting lost and stolen passports.
