According to data from June 2009, “Internet World Stats” report, the internet dispersal rate in Africa is 6.7% and African internet users account for only 3.9% of internet users world wide.
Home computers are not a common site for many across the continent. For many people living in rural parts of Africa, an internet café is often the first contact with the internet and their first encounter with technology such as searching the web or sending and receiving email. They are also the best way to keep in touch using the internet for the traveler. They are commonly found close to schools, colleges, or shopping centers. It is important to note that the functionality can be limited. Although the majority of internet cafés have open internet browsing, some internet cafés only allow for job searching or sending and receiving emails.
