South-west of the Johannesburg city centre is the ever-mushrooming township of Soweto, a city in its own right. It is famous for so many acts of defiance against the apartheid government. This is also where the city’s football heart lies and it’s no wonder that the World Cup 2010 final will be played here at the Soccer City stadium.
On the outskirts of this township you’ll find the massive Nasrec development along with the calabash-inspired Soccer City stadium.
Vibrant Soweto is the most populous black urban residential area in South Africa and is home to about 3 million people. Due to its proximity to Johannesburg, the economic centre of the country, it is also the most urban township in the country - setting trends in politics, music, fashion, language and dance.
