Getting in to Bloemfontein by train
The main railway route between Johannesburg and Cape Town passes by Bloemfontein en route via Beaufort West and Kimberley. There is only one railway service, the Shosholza Meyl, offering tourist and economy class seating, that runs between Bloemfontein and Johannesburg.
The tourist class facility runs on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Economy services are provided on a daily basis from Monday to Friday and Sundays. No economy service is available on Saturdays.
The Trans-Oranje is a train service that runs weekly between Cape Town and Durban and goes via Bloemfontein and Kimberley.
Long distance travellers can comfortably make use of rail transport. These trains are equipped with comfortable sleeping compartments and restaurant carts. As a rule, overnight fees and some meals are included in the fares.
Getting in by road
With Bloemfontein being centre of South Africa, it is just commonsense that the N1 national route from Johannesburg to Cape Town will pass through Bloemfontein.
All national and provincial roads are tarred and in a good condition. Toll roads guarantee an excellent quality of tarred road. It is advisable to have cash handy in case you pass by a toll road.
There are plenty of luxury bus companies that provide comfortable and secure countrywide transport that depart and arrive on a daily basis at the Tourist Centre in Bloemfontein.
You can safely travel by road on your own with a car obtained from car rental companies that provide services in all major centres and airports if you follow a national route. There are enough petrol and gas stations along the way. Some gas stations don’t take cards so have cash handy.
The travelling distance from Bloemfontein to Cape Town is about 990 km on the N1 National road. Travelling to Durban is about 660 km if you travel on the N1 to Winburg and on the N5 to Harrismith from where the N3 is used to reach Durban.
Johannesburg and Pretoria are about 405 km away on the N1 as well. Should you want to visit Rustenburg, you will travel on the N1 to Pretoria and from Pretoria on the N4 towards Rustenburg. Going to Nelspruit, you will use the N1 to Johannesburg, onto the N12 to Witbank and then use the N4 to Nelspruit. From Bloemfontein to Nelspruit is about 780 km.
