Sports

While there are many favourite sports throughout the various regions of the continent, the most popular sport in Africa is football. Football clubs are found in many of the major cities, with most of them being government sponsored rather than corporate sponsored. The African Cup of Nations is the main football competition in Africa and has been held every two years since 1957.

Other sports include rugby and cricket, which are popular in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya, with all three countries playing at an international level. Sprinters and middle and long-distance runners from Africa have dominated the World Championships in Athletics and the Olympics, particularly runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Morocco.

Water sports like canoeing, kayaking, and white water rafting can be found on the many lakes and rivers throughout Africa, while the coasts, especially the resort areas of Kenya, Egypt, and South Africa, feature scuba diving and surfing.

Basketball is one of the fastest growing sports in Africa. Netball, similar to basketball, is the most popular female team sport in Sudan, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa.
