Humanitarian agencies say the condition of newly-arrived Somali refugees at camps in Ethiopia is deteriorating as famine spreads inside Somalia. At the Hilaweyn camp along the Somalia-Ethiopia border, more than half the newly-arrived children are suffering from malnutrition.

While the number of citizens in Ethiopia in need of food handouts due to the drought was 3.2 million, over 4.5 million citizens require emergency relief over the coming six months, according to UNOCHA report released Monday. The report indicates that an additional USD 398.4 million is needed to accommodate the surging number of citizens who need food and non-food aid.

The UK has pledged £38m ($61m) in food aid to drought-hit Ethiopia - enough to feed 1.3m people for three months. International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell said the World Food Programme cash would also treat 329,000 malnourished children and mothers.

Gemini has an acute funding crisis brought on by a combination of new civil society legislation in Ethiopia and the world’s economic downturn. We have had to severely curtail several of our programs and are unable to recruit new families into the program.
